William Richter

William R. Richter, 83, passed away July 14, 2016 at Apple Cooney Rehab Center in Helena, MT. Visitation will be held Thursday July 21, 2016 at Gorder-Jensen Funeral Home in Choteau, MT from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Grave side service with Military Honors will be held Friday July 22, 2016 at 10:00 am at Sun River Cemetery with a Memorial luncheon to follow at 12:00 pm at the Stage Stop Inn, Choteau, MT.

William was born August 14, 1932 in Great Falls, MT to Maxine Wiley and William Richter, he was the oldest of nine siblings. William attended Fort Shaw Elementary, Simms High School and went on to College at Montana State College and Oregon State University where he received a B.S. degree in Animal Science and an M.S. degree in Animal Science. In 1955 William entered the Air Force and became a jet fighter pilot. He took classes at The War College and retired from the United States Air Force with 20 years of service and rank of Lt. Colonel. After his service he worked as a County Agricultural Agent with M.S.U. They served Flathead, Lincoln, Garfield, Silver Bow and Teton Counties. William retired in 1990 after 32 years of service. During his extensive career, William met Carol Anne (Candy) O'Connell and they couple were married September 17, 1960 in Kalispell, MT, they spent almost 56 years together.

William was an active member of the Kiwanis Club for many years and served as officers and Lt. Gov. of the club. He was a member of the American Legion for many years as well. He served as President, Adjutant and District Commander and helped with Rodeo and firing squad for funeral services. For many years he was a part of the Farm Bureau Service and served on the Cascade County Board of Directors. In 2014 William won the Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime of Service to Agriculture.

William is survived by his wife Carol Anne (Candy) Richter. Daughters Laurie (Bill) Sullivan of East Helena, MT and Leslie (Dave) Monarchi of Broomfield, CO. His Grandson Shea Sullivan of East Helena, MT and sisters Zelda Haines of Seeley Lake, MT; Wilma (Bill) Wilcox of Olathe, Kansas and Cathy (Terry) Rearden of Great Falls, MT. His brothers Lester (Susan) Richter of Great Falls, MT; John (Linda) Richter of Great Falls, MT and Forrest Richter of Missoula, MT and well as many nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his mother and father and brothers Birquette (Buck) Richter and Brion Richter.

Memorials are suggested to the Montana 4-H Foundations and Montana Farm Bureau Foundation.
