Vernon Erickson

July 10, 1936 — July 23, 2017

Heaven gained an angel when beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend Vernon "Dewey" Erickson passed away peacefully at his home on July 23rd, 2017. He battled a long and courageous fight with West Nile Virus and its complications.

Dewey was born on July 10th, 1936 to Ben and Anna Erickson in Deer River, Minnesota. Sister Judy Lavonne Erickson was Born July 7TH, 1941.

In 1955 while employed with the Vanderbilt's working on their racetrack in California, Dewey decided to serve his country; much to the dismay of Mrs. Vanderbilt.

On March 9, 1955 Dewey enlisted in the US Army and served under the 19th Infantry Reg. 24th Division during the Korean Conflict. Once stationed in Korea, rumor has it that because of his height and stature that he was positioned in the demilitarized zone to monitor/guard the border crossings. On December 18th 1956 he was honorably discharged from the Army.

Upon his discharge Dewey ventured back to Augusta and met Christina "Tina" McDonald working at the Silver Bit Cafe. They fell in love and where married July 23th, 1957 at Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Together they raised 4 children, working on various ranches including A.B. Cobb and the Hamilton Ranch until which time Dewey was hired by Lewis and Clark County Road Department in 1971. After 28 Years with the Road Department Dewey retired on July 1st 1998. Not a man to sit idle Dewey then worked on and off with Heco Construction and the Young Ranch.

After Tina's death in 2000-Dewey became acquainted with, and fell in love with and married Reidun Inga Skram of Choteau. They were married on July 26th, 2003. Dewey and Reidun moved to Choteau where they made a loving home. They enjoyed 14 years of marriage and many wonderful adventures traveling.

Dewey was a strong and wise man who spent many hours volunteering. He was a member of the Augusta Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion, Senior Citizens Center, Cemetery Boards and Churches.

During his time in Augusta-Dewey and Tina enjoyed not only raising their kids but also taking an active role in supporting the education and growth of up to an additional 19 kids per school year living at the family home. He was an active Augusta Elks fan and spent many hours driving the activities buses and sitting on the sidelines cheering on his family and extended family. Sometimes he could be found waiting patiently by the back door for a child to return home past curfew with a stern lecture to follow.

Dewey is survived by his loving wife Reidun Erickson, Children- Donald (Betty) Erickson, Jerry Erickson, Linda (Ben) Hoge and Ann Hall. Along with stepdaughter Anna Pratt. His family grew with an additional 8 grandkids and 10 great grandkids.

He was preceded in death by first wife- Christina "Tina" Erickson; Parents Ben and Anna Erickson- Sister Judy Erickson and Son- in- law Mark Hall.

Services will be held on August 5th, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Choteau, Montana.

A luncheon will follow the service and burial with Military Honors will follow the luncheon at the Augusta Cemetery at 2:30

Donations may be made to the Augusta American Legion, and Choteau Legion or to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Choteau.
