Thelma Mae Nauck passed away on July 2nd, 2017, at Benefis Teton Medical Center extended care after fighting kidney failure for several years. Thelma was born May 5, 1930, the only child of John and Ila Heldt of Lake City, Minnesota. After graduating from Lake City High School, she attended a vocational school in St. Paul, Minnesota. There, she completed the coursework and became certified as both a medical technologist and X-ray technician. After working in a local physician's office for three years, Thelma accepted a position at Teton Memorial Hospital and moved to Choteau, Montana in August 1952.
She met John R. (Bob) Nauck, then the vocational agriculture instructor at Choteau High School. They were married on December 29, 1952 and had two children, a son, Charles, born in 1957, and a daughter, Barbara husband Rick, born in 1959.
Thelma continued to work part time as an X-ray technician until the early 1970s, when she served as the Choteau Public Library librarian from 1972 until 1980. Thelma re-entered the medical field when she was appointed to serve as Teton County Emergency Services Director in 1980. As Director, she increased the number of volunteer EMS personnel, secured updated equipment (acquiring two new ambulances in an eight year period), and reorganized the EMS education and training program.
During her years as an EMS instructor, Thelma taught more than 200 students the basic EMT course and many others basic first aid and CPR. She served on the Montana Region 2A EMS board and participated in state policy making decisions for ambulance crews. After 23 years working with Emergency Medical Services, Thelma retired and became involved with local animal welfare. She served on the Bright Eyes Foundation and also as a volunteer once the shelter was built.
Thelma is survived by her husband, children, grandson Kyle, his wife Ruby, great granddaughter Kaira, nephew Robert Smith and grand dog, Dakota Rose.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund to benefit EMS volunteer education/training and Bright Eyes shelter has been established in Thelma's name at the First Security Bank in Choteau.
A private family service will be held at the Choteau Cemetery.
