Robert "Bob", "Unk" Carl Carlson, 89 of Fairfield passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 12, 2017 at Peace Hospice in Great Falls. Bob was born on June 2, 1927 to Carl and Ella Carlson in Choteau, Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Margaret "Peggy" Carlson Julius, Don Carlson, Ray Carlson, Jan Carlson and niece Candy Julius Tenoweth. Bob is survived by nephews Sam Carlson of Fairfield, Jim (Martha) Carlson of Seattle, Niece Deb Carlson (Pat) Saylor of Choteau, and 4 Great Nieces.
Bob served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific in World War II, returning to graduate from Teton County High School in 1945. Bob owned and operated Carlson's Foods in Fairfield for 25 years with his brother Ray. The store was sold in 1974 and the brothers went into the specialty advertising business as the Carlson Boys. Bob continued working until the time of his death.
Bob was very active in his community. He was a Life Member of the Lions Club, VFW, Legion, and Masonic Lodge. He belonged to the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Algeria & Bagdad Shrine, Jesters and Elk Lodge. Bob helped with the Montana Special Olympics for many years, was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, was an active fundraiser for the Teton Memorial Hospital in Choteau, and was instrumental in organizing Fairfield's first Swim Day Celebration to raise money for the swimming pool.
Bob's yard "on the corner" in Fairfield was testament to his talent as a gardener. He loved his flowers and beautiful yard. Bob was a kind and generous man to all. To his knowledge, no one in the area ever went hungry and his delightful sense of humor will be missed by many.
At his request, no formal funeral services will be held. There will be a memorial Reception and time of Remembrance on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the VFW - Servicemen's Club in Fairfield (Main Street) from 3-6 P.M. All are welcome.
Suggested memorials to Shriner's Hospital - 911 W. 5th Ave. - Spokane, WA 99204 or charity of choice.
