Norman Mitchell

January 24, 1930 — November 24, 2014

Norman Don "Duke" Mitchell, age 84, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes during his afternoon nap, Nov. 24, 2014. He joins his beloved wife, Emma La Rhea Mitchell, who passed in 1989. Duke was born on Jan. 24, 1930 to William Wesley and Olive Myrtle (Bettey) Mitchell.

From the time he was a small boy in Shelley, Idaho he was an outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and working outside. He proudly served in the US Navy. Duke followed in his father's footsteps and became a third generation bee keeper. He married in 1950 and moved his family to Missoula, Montana in 1957. With his brother Russell, he founded Mitchell Brothers Honey. Long days of hard work in the bees didn't stop him from having a large productive vegetable garden and devoting hours every week in service to The Church or Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a valiant servant as he fulfilled his callings as Bishop, Missionary and in the Stake Presidency. Although he never had sons, he loved working with young men in Boy Scouts. He never tired of taking them camping, hiking or hunting. Duke was a master pie baker. He developed a recipe for perfect pineapple pie. But he would tell you his highest accomplishment was raising four daughters. He taught them by example to be kind, forgiving and to serve all with a touch of humor.

Duke is survived by his daughters; Linda Allred and Sherry Skillman both of Lolo. Marilee (Daniel) Stott of Choteau and Joni (Darrin) Muir of Victor, 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Benjamin and Mary (Hank) Brown of Idaho. He was proceeded in death by his by his wife, parents, twin sister Norma Owen, siblings Russell Mitchell and Helen Browning.

Two services will be held. Choteau, MT at the LDS Church, Dec. 5, 2014. Viewing at 10:30AM and funeral at 11 AM. Lolo, MT at the LDS Church, Dec. 6, 2014. Funeral at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Victor, MT following the service.
