Joyce Duffey

November 10, 1923 — January 10, 2019

Joyce Lucille (Landes) Duffey (95), daughter of William Emery Landes and Ada (Petty) Landes born November 10, 1923 on their homestead in East Fork Township North of Williston, North Dakota, died on January 10, 2019 at her home outside of Choteau, Montana.



Joyce was the youngest of six children, she attended East Fork and Garden Valley Grade Schools and graduated from Williston High School in 1941. Joyce worked at her brother Irv Landes' ice cream store, "The Spinning Wheel" during her Junior and Senior years of High School.



Joyce did secretarial work at the Farmer's Union Grain and Supply in Williston, North Dakota until the start of World War II. She then worked at Buckler Co. Shipfitters in Vancouver, WA until her marriage to Edwin J. Duffey in 1944. After WWII Joyce and Ed lived in Choteau, MT for a few years before they moved to the Trenton, ND area where they farmed on the Buford Trenton Irrigation District for many years. Joyce also worked 28 years as bookkeeper/secretary at the Buford Trenton Irrigation District. Later they were caretakers of the Ft Buford Historic Site. In 1988 they retired and moved to their present home 5 1/2 miles South of Choteau, Montana, which they called Meadowlark Hill.



Ed and Joyce had six children, JoAnne (Dennis) Erickson of Butte, MT; James (Sue) of Fairview, MT; William (Karen) of Choteau, MT; Donna (Darrell) Falcon of Minot, ND; Timothy (Donna) of Standish, ME; and Peggy (Roger) of Clarinda, IA. She is survived by 5 children, 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Joyce is also survived by her sister-In-law, Alice Landes of Provo, Utah and numerous nieces and nephews.



Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, and daughter, JoAnne.



Joyce enjoyed her flower garden, watching birds, reading, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, Scrabble, cryptograms, words with friends, and the outdoors.

At her request, there will be no public memorial service. A family gathering to celebrate her life is planned for a later date. Memorials can be made in Joyce's name to Easter Seals of Montana, Peace Hospice, or Bright-Eyes Animal Shelter in Choteau, MT.
