John M. "Sam" Rose, age 83, life-long resident of Choteau, MT died Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Teton Medical Center in Choteau, MT. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 10th at the Choteau United Methodist Church and interment of his cremated remains will be in the Choteau Cemetery. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder Jensen Funeral Home.
Sam was born October 12, 1929 in Choteau, MT, the son of Martin and Elsie (Westaway) Rose. He was raised and educated in Choteau, MT and was a proud graduate of Montana State College with a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology and Entomology. While in College he was active in student government and was President of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.
He was married to Beverly Talbott on August 15, 1954 in Great Falls, MT. He served in the US Air Force following his graduation.
Sam was a member of the Choteau United Methodist Church, the Choteau Chamber of Commerce, Stock Growers Association, charter member and past President of the Choteau Jaycees, Choteau United Methodist Church, and Choteau American Legion. He was on the Board of Directors of the Montana Farm Bureau, Mountain West Insurance Company, Russell Country Tourism Board, BLM Advisory Council, Museum of the Rockies Regional Advisory Board, Montana State University Alumni Board, Teton County Planning Board, and Teton County Police Commission. He was past chairman of the Board of the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind Foundation, past chairman of the Old Trail Museum, the Teton County Republicans, He was honored to serve in the Montana House of Representatives for 8 years where he received the Gene Donaldson Laureate Award recognizing leadership in the field of public education.
Sam enjoyed teaching and ranching, working with kids and coaching the local football, basketball and track teams, fishing, and watching sports, especially the Bobcat football team. He also enjoyed politics and following his grandchildren's activities
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Rose , daughter, Robin (Sam) Phares of Big Timber, MT and son, Charles Rose and family of Billings, MT, a brother, Don Rose of Cascade, MT; grandchildren: John and Lauren Phares, both of Big Timber, MT and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Charles and James Rose, and a sister: Anna Field.
Sam gave so generously of himself to others, family, friends, community and state. Now rest in peace , our beloved husband, dad, and papa.
