Helen M. Nicholson, just five weeks short of completing her 101st year, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013 at the Beehive Assisted Living in Choteau, MT from natural causes.
She was born July 3, 1912 at Farmington MO, the third of eight children to Henry W. Manley and Madia McKamey Manley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Wayne (Nick) Nicholson, a son, Lerry Wayne Nicholson, 2 brothers Jack M. Manley and Robert B. Manley, and 3 sisters, Ms. Bess Cebe, Ms. Betty Manley and Mrs. Alice Clark
After graduating from the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in education and master's degree from Colorado State University, Helen taught in Festus, MO, where she met her future husband, Nick Nicholson, They were married on August 9, 1943, in Farmington, and 2 years later began their family in Louisville KY and later Indianapolis, IN where she was able to stay at home to enjoy raising her son and daughter and eventually doing substitute teaching. She and Nick moved to Clarinda, IA in 1968 and they lived together there until Nick's death in 1988. She moved to Choteau, MT in 1991 to be closer to her daughter and family.
Helen was never one to pass up an afternoon or evening with a good game of bridge. Until she was 99, she played bridge weekly as well as daily games of Russian Banc with her daughter and granddaughters. Besides time with family she will be remembered for her poetry written to express her thoughts about life, and the many crocheted afghans she made for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Affectionately deemed the "energizer bunny", Helen surprised many with her resilience and spark for life.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Steve Wibbeler of Choteau, MT, a brother and sister: Jim Manley of Dallas, TX and Mary Crouch of Farmington, MO, grandchildren: Missy Ramaker of Boise, ID, Ali Zackheim of Helena, MT and Deb Mitchell of Choteau, MT; 3 great grandchildren, Teddy Ramaker, Kyler Mitchell, and Vireo Helena Zackheim. Her extended family includes "adopted" daughter, Danna McAllister of Choteau, daughter in law, Pam Nicholson of Redondo Beach, Ca and kind, supportive caregivers at the Bee Hive in Choteau.
No services are planned at this time. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder Jensen Funeral Home and burial will be in Farminton Mo at a later time.
