Evelyn Bernice Brown, age 91 of Choteau, MT died Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Teton Medical Center Extended Care Unit in Choteau. Graveside committal services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Fairfield. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Choteau. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder Jensen Funeral Home of Choteau.
Evelyn was born July 3, 1922 in Valentine, MT, the daughter of Marvin Sr. and Lucy Edna (Kelley) Lewis. She attended elementary school at a one-room school in Welter, MT and then high school in Lewistown, Choteau and Fairfield. She married Albert Fiers on November 25, 1940 and they later divorced. At this time Evelyn attended and graduated from cosmetology school in Great Falls. Evelyn married Lester Brown on August 6, 1954 in Great Falls, MT. She and Lester farmed and milked cows together for 15 years on their farm near Fairfield where they also raised Lester's son Roland and Evelyn's niece Sue Lewis. Lester preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1969 and she continued to operate the dairy business until 1971 when she moved back to Choteau and went to work at the Teton Memorial Hospital (now known as Teton Medical Center) and retired after 15 years of service.
After her retirement, she and her mother spent winters in Arizona for 23 years. In her younger years, she loved to fish. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling, planting a garden, raising raspberries and flowers, and doing needle work. She loved to play cards and Bingo at the Choteau Senior Center and Skyline Lodge.
She attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Choteau Senior Citizen's Center for 22 years. She was named Senior Citizen of the Year while living in Choteau.
Evelyn is survived by a sister: Shirley (Del) Cather of Moab, UT, a sister-in-law: Jean Lewis of Summerland, British Columbia, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester, a stepson Roland and four brothers: Marvin Lewis Jr., Floyd Lewis, Lester Lewis and Robert Lewis and sisters-in-law: Phyllis and Belva Lewis.
