Eugene L. Andrus, 86, died of natural causes on March 20, 2013, at Benefis East, Great Falls, MT. Gene, well-known as Squint, was born on May 28, 1926, in LaMoure, North Dakota, to Ross and Mildred Andrus. After graduating from Oakes High School in 1944, he joined the US Navy and was stationed in Hawthorne, NV. He returned to Oakes and farmed with his step-dad, Ted Baska. It is there that he met and married Patricia Scanlon on July 3, 1950. After farming for a few years, he moved to Montana in 1961 and retired from 3-Rivers Telephone Co-op, Fairfield, MT, as Manager, in 1992.
He had a great love for baseball and both played and coached for many years. He coached teams starting with Little League continuing through Babe Ruth. A special highlight was playing softball with his son, Mike, and the boys he had coached.
Squint is survived by his wife, Pat, Fairfield, MT; two daughters, Pam (Lee) Olson, Helena, MT and Joyce (Arnie) Andrus-Pike, Kuna, ID; two grandsons, Shaun Olson, Lakewood, CO; and Shayan Andrus, Boise, ID. He is also survived by two brothers, Norman Andrus, Oakes, ND, Larry (Luann) Knoke, Jamestown, ND; and three sisters, Dorothy (Bob) Kubasta, Auburn, WA, June Masse, Oakes, ND, and Karen (Bob) Edwards, Federal Way, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Squint was preceded in death by his brothers Clifford and Kenneth, a daughter Patricia Addie and his son Michael Joseph.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorder Jensesn Funeral Home, Choteau, MT. A service is not planned. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Condolences may be posted online at www.gorderjensenfuneralhome. com.
