Charles Ward

December 22, 1926 — August 3, 2013

Charles Adlai Ward, known as "Ad", son of the late Charles A. Ward, Sr. and Daisy A. Munyan Ward of Laurel, Montana, passed away at The Teton Nursing Home, in Choteau, Montana, on August 3rd, after a long illness.

Adlai was born December 22, 1926. He was a native of Laurel, Montana. After high school, he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, starting the fires to get up steam in the engines in preparation for scheduled service.

Adlai joined the U.S. Army in late 1944 and trained as a paratrooper. After his Honorable Discharge on December 14, 1945, Adlai pursued his first love, working in the north woods of Montana and Alaska as a lumberjack. After 30 years working in the timber, Adlai retired to Melstone, Montana, where the Metzger family extended their special brand of love and attention. No one was a stranger and he was known for the "tall tales" he shared with friends and tourists alike who stopped to eat at the Melstone Cafe. While at the Nursing Home in Choteau he made friends easily and continued to tell his tales to the end. His wit and memory were exceptionally sharp and he amazed everyone with recitation of poetry and with the ballads he remembered and sang.

Adlai is survived by one brother, John Ellis Ward of Watkinsville, Georgia, 7 nieces, 3 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Burt Ward of Edgar, Montana and one sister, Charlotte "Lottie" Gunnels of Laurel, Montana.

Gorder Jensen Funeral Home in Choteau and Smith Funeral Home in Laurel are in charge of arrangements. In memory of Ad, and in lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Teton Nursing Home, Choteau, Montana.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, August7th at the Yellowstone County Veteran's Cemetery in Laurel, MT. Visitation will be from 8:00am to 12:00pm at the Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel, MT.
